How do I clean wildfire smoke and ash off my windows without ruining them?
Do not wipe it dry, and do not leave it wet. Wildfire residue is a mixture of fine carbon, alkaline ash and condensed organic tars, and each fraction behaves differently. The carbon is abrasive, so dry-wiping grinds it across the pane and leaves permanent fine scratching. The ash is caustic enough that letting it sit wet on glass can etch it. The tar fraction is oily and smears rather than lifting under ordinary detergent. The sequence that works is a flooded neutral-pH pass to carry the alkaline fraction off before anything with an edge touches the glass, then a separate solvent step for the tar, then the actual wash. It is a different job than a maintenance clean and it should be quoted as one.
When it happens: September through December is the highest-risk window, when dry fuels overlap the start of Santa Ana season, though a major event can occur outside it.

Most smoke residue comes off completely when the sequence is right, and the glass is genuinely fine underneath. Two things prevent that outcome. Glass that has already been dry-wiped may carry fine scratching from the carbon, which is permanent and shows in low-angle light. Glass that sat with wet alkaline ash against it for an extended period, particularly in sun, may be etched. Both are surface damage rather than film, and no cleaning recovers them. A reputable cleaner will test an inconspicuous section and tell you which you have before quoting the job.
A wildfire plume carries three distinct things: elemental and organic carbon from incomplete combustion, mineral ash from burned vegetation and structures, and condensed semi-volatile organic compounds, which is the tar fraction.
The carbon is very fine and physically hard. It behaves like an abrasive powder on a glass surface, which is why the instinctive response, wiping a hazy window with a dry cloth, is precisely the wrong move.
Vegetation and structure ash is alkaline, sometimes strongly so. On a dry pane it is inert. Wetted and left, it raises surface pH against the glass and, given time and heat, can begin etching it. This is why a light rinse that does not fully carry the ash away can be worse than no rinse at all.
The tar fraction condenses onto cool surfaces as an oily film and binds the carbon into it. Detergent moves an oil-bound film around rather than lifting it, which is why smoke-filmed glass so often looks only marginally better after a normal wash.
Materially more than a maintenance clean, and honestly so. It is more labour per pane, it needs more product, and it carries more risk. Expect it quoted per opening or per elevation rather than as a flat house price, and expect screens to be handled separately because ash embeds in mesh and must be washed flat rather than brushed. If a company quotes post-fire cleaning at the same rate as an ordinary wash, they are planning to do an ordinary wash.
Rinsing is the useful DIY step, with one rule: flood, do not mist. A generous flood of plain water carries the alkaline ash away; a light spray wets it and leaves it in place, which is the worse outcome. Do not wipe dry at any stage. Do not use a razor. Do not use an alkaline glass cleaner, because the residue is already alkaline. Clear tracks and sills with a vacuum rather than a brush, because brushing drives ash into the weep holes. If the film survives flooding, stop and let someone handle the solvent stage, since that is where the technique and the risk actually are.
Removing it once is half the job. This is the half that determines whether you pay for it again next year.
