Why is there a hazy stripe on the bottom of my windows after it rains?
It is splash-back. Hard rain hits bare soil or gravel landscaping near the house and throws it up onto the glass, and in New Mexico that soil is caliche — calcium carbonate cemented sand. The sun then bakes it dry within the hour, before it can run off. The band is sharply defined at the top because that is simply how high the splash reaches. The critical detail: caliche is chemically alkaline, so ordinary alkaline glass cleaner makes it more stubborn rather than less. That is why homeowners scrub the same stripe for an hour and get nowhere. It needs a mild acid to convert the carbonate first.

Splash-back removes cleanly in almost all cases, provided the right chemistry is used and the season has not been allowed to compound for years. It is a restoration step rather than a wash: a mild acid applied to the band with a controlled dwell time to convert the carbonate, then a normal clean over the top. Where several seasons have accumulated on a west-facing ground-floor window, expect it to take two passes. Genuine permanent etching from splash alone is rare, because the deposit sits low on the glass and gets less direct UV than a cooler-fed elevation.
New Mexico's monsoon delivers short, intense afternoon rain rather than the sustained gentle rain that would rinse a window. High-energy drops hit bare ground and eject soil particles upward in a spray.
Gravel and rock xeriscape makes it worse rather than better. A raindrop hitting a hard stone rebounds with more energy than one landing on grass or mulch, so a rock-mulched bed throws material higher up the wall.
The soil in question across most of the Albuquerque basin and the Rio Grande valley is caliche — calcium carbonate cementing sand and clay. When it dries on glass it behaves chemically like a thin layer of limestone.
High-desert sun evaporates the moisture within the hour, so the material dries in place instead of running off. Each storm adds another layer, and by September a window that has not been cleaned since June carries a genuinely bonded band.
This is usually a modest addition to a standard window cleaning rather than a separate job, because it affects one band on ground-floor windows rather than whole elevations. Where it has built up over multiple monsoon seasons it is quoted as restoration on the affected windows.
Very workable as a DIY task if timed right. Treat it soon after the storm season rather than at the end of it. White vinegar or a mineral remover, applied to the band with a saturated cloth, given five minutes to dwell, then wiped and rinsed. Work in shade. Do not let the acid run down onto stucco or adobe below the window. Skip the pressure washer — pressure aimed at a window frame drives water into the seal, and pressure aimed at the wall beneath drives water into stucco.
Removing it once is half the job. This is the half that determines whether you pay for it again next year.

Because most people scrub with a glass cleaner, and glass cleaners are alkaline. Caliche is calcium carbonate, which is also alkaline — alkaline chemistry cannot convert it, and some formulations make it grip harder. Five minutes of mild acid does more than an hour of scrubbing, and without the scratch risk.
Worse, counterintuitively. A raindrop rebounds off hard stone with more energy than off soil, grass, or mulch, so gravel beds throw material higher up the wall. Larger cobble is better than fine gravel, and low planting under windows is better than either.
Wait, mostly. A clean in mid-July gets undone by the next storm. The high-value appointment is late September once the season closes, so the accumulation comes off before it has all winter to bond. If it bothers you mid-season, treat just the band rather than paying for a full clean twice.
