Can scratched window glass be repaired?
Mostly, no — and that is why prevention matters more here than on any other window problem. Light surface scratches can sometimes be reduced with cerium oxide polishing, but the process removes glass to level the surface, which introduces optical distortion. On a large pane that distortion is often more objectionable than the scratch was. Deep scratches and any scratch on tempered or coated glass are generally not repairable, and the honest answer is replacement or living with it. The good news is that the most common cause is entirely preventable and takes about two minutes per window.

Cerium oxide polishing can reduce light surface scratching on plain annealed glass, performed slowly with a felt pad and constant water cooling. It is genuinely difficult work, it takes hours per pane, and because it removes material to level the surface it can leave a shallow lens effect that distorts the view. On large panes and on any glass you look through daily, that trade is frequently worse than the original scratch. Tempered glass, coated glass, and insulated units with surface coatings should generally not be polished. For a scratch that bothers you on an expensive pane, replacement of the glass unit — not the whole window — is usually the sensible path.
Track grit is the leading cause. In windy or dusty markets, window tracks accumulate a layer of sharp mineral particles. Wetting a window and then running a squeegee across it drags that material over the glass. This is why dry-vacuuming tracks before introducing any water is the single most important process step in a dusty climate, and why it is the step most often skipped.
Dry-wiping construction fines is the second cause. Cement and stucco particles are harder than glass, and a dry cloth turns them into sandpaper.
Razor blades on tempered glass are the third. Tempering ovens can fuse microscopic debris into the glass surface; a blade catches that debris and drags it, producing scratching that looks like cleaner error but originates in manufacturing.
Worn squeegee rubber and contaminated pads contribute quietly. A nicked rubber blade holds grit in the nick and reintroduces it on every pass.
Coated glass — low-E, tinted, and reflective films — is more vulnerable than plain glass, and some coatings are on the exposed surface rather than sealed inside the unit.
Polishing is priced by the hour and by the pane, and on a large window it can approach the cost of a replacement glass unit, which is why we usually recommend pricing both before committing. Replacing an insulated glass unit within an existing frame is far cheaper than replacing the window, and many homeowners do not realize that is an option.
Scratch removal is a poor DIY project — the failure mode is a distorted pane rather than an unsuccessful attempt, and it is not reversible. What is very much worth doing yourself is prevention: vacuum your window tracks dry before you ever put water on the glass, keep a dedicated clean cloth for windows, and never dry-wipe glass in a dusty or construction environment. Those habits prevent nearly all of what we see.
Removing it once is half the job. This is the half that determines whether you pay for it again next year.

It depends on the cause, and it is worth establishing that before the argument. Scratching from skipped track vacuuming or dry-wiping is a workmanship issue. Scratching from fabrication debris in tempered glass originates at the factory and can occur even with correct technique — which is why careful cleaners test a corner first and document what they find.
Almost always just the glass. An insulated glass unit can usually be replaced within the existing frame at a fraction of the cost of a full window replacement, and many homeowners do not realize that is available to them.
