Sonlight serves Altadena from Christmas Tree Lane and the Meadows up through the streets against the Angeles National Forest boundary. Altadena sits higher and closer to the mountains than anywhere else in this part of the valley, which gives it the hardest wind, the coolest nights and a rebuilding community with a great deal of new glass going in.
Altadena is served by Lincoln Avenue and Rubio Canon water out of the Raymond Basin, supplemented with imported supply. That is hard water filtered through limestone-rich mountain alluvium, and it means irrigation overspray is the leading cause of permanent glass damage here. It sits at around 1,350 feet with real overnight cooling, so it is one of the few parts of the basin where morning condensation is a genuine factor: dew wets whatever dust is already on the pane and dries it into a film rather than washing it off.
The wind is the other constant. The San Gabriels rise directly behind the community and Santa Ana events funnel down the canyons at their most violent, arriving from inland with decomposed granite and chaparral litter that packs tracks and abrades screen mesh. Altadena is also rebuilding: the Eaton Fire in January 2025 destroyed 9,414 structures and damaged 1,074 more in this corridor, and Los Angeles County had issued permits for 931 residences in Altadena by the end of 2025. Practically, that means a large volume of brand-new glass going into homes surrounded by active construction, and construction fines are harder than glass and must never be wiped dry.
Four variables decide what is on a window in Southern California and what it takes to get it off: which water you drink, how much ocean you get, where the wind comes from, and how long it goes without raining. Here is where Altadena sits on each.
Southern California does not run on the four seasons that window cleaning advice usually assumes. Altadena follows the San Gabriel Valley calendar, which is the actual year in the order it happens and what each phase does to your glass.
What it does to glass
Almost all of the year's rain lands here and the foothills take more of it than the basin does. The first storm mobilises a dry season of dust and mineral into streaks, and on the foothill slopes it drives runoff and sediment against ground-floor glass.
What we do about it
Clean and clear drainage in late October or November, before the first storm. On historic buildings we check and photograph glazing condition on the way through, because a failed putty joint found in November is cheaper than the same joint found in February.
What it does to glass
Seven months with no rinse, and here the irrigation runs the entire time on very hard water. Every head that clips a pane leaves calcium behind and the sun evaporates it within minutes. This is the season in which permanent damage is created.
What we do about it
We walk the beds before leaving and point out exactly which heads are hitting glass. Moving one head is a ten-minute fix that saves years of restoration cost, and we would rather tell you that than put you on an annual restoration schedule.
What it does to glass
The worst wind in the region, funneled down the canyons at fifty to seventy miles an hour and carrying decomposed granite. It packs tracks and weep holes, abrades screen mesh, and loads the mountain-facing elevation rather than the one you would expect.
What we do about it
Tracks cleared dry before any water, without exception. Exterior work booked into an active event gets rescheduled at no charge, because cleaning glass in a wind event is paying for a result that lasts an hour.
What it does to glass
In the interface communities the deposit in some years is smoke residue: fine carbon, alkaline ash and condensed organic tars. The ash can etch if left wet on glass, the tar smears rather than lifting, and the carbon is abrasive.
What we do about it
Flooded neutral-pH pass to carry the alkaline fraction off, then a separate solvent step, then the wash. Never a dry wipe. It is a different job and it is quoted as one.
What it does to glass
Jacaranda honeydew across the older Pasadena and Arcadia streets, plus a genuine deciduous leaf and seed load from a mature canopy that most of Southern California does not have.
What we do about it
Early July for jacaranda blocks, once the drop finishes. Screens come off and are washed flat rather than brushed in place, because canopy debris felts into mesh when it is brushed.

With rebuilding underway across the community, cement, stucco and gypsum fines are in the air and settling on finished homes well beyond the property line. Once damp they cure into a haze that behaves like a thin mineral film, and they are harder than glass. Wiping them dry grinds them across the pane and leaves permanent fine scratching. New construction needs a rough clean and a final clean in that order, with flooding and dwell time rather than a wipe.
Santa Ana events off the range behind Altadena pack decomposed granite into tracks and weep holes. Hosing the window first and then dragging a squeegee through the wet grit is how glass here gets permanently marked. Dry track clearing before any water is not optional in this community, and screens get inspected as they come off because wind-abraded mesh looks fine from inside.
At 1,350 feet with real overnight cooling, Altadena gets genuine morning condensation that the flatland cities do not. Dew wets the dust already on the pane, holds it there, and dries it into a mottled film rather than rinsing anything. It is why Altadena glass can look worse on a still, clear week than the same house would twenty minutes south.

The service this metro actually needs most. Most of Greater LA drinks 12 to 18 grain water, and irrigation overspray does more permanent damage to glass here than anything airborne.
