Why is there a water stain above my window in winter?
Because water is getting under your roofing and traveling down inside the wall until it reaches the window head, where it stops and shows. The usual mechanism is an ice dam: snow on the roof melts from below, the meltwater runs to the cold eave and refreezes, and the growing ice ridge blocks the next round of meltwater and forces it back up under the shingles. Blocked gutters accelerate the whole process by giving the ice somewhere to anchor. The stain is a symptom that appears in February; the cause was usually a gutter nobody cleared in October.

Nothing about this is fixed by working on the window, and it is worth saying that plainly because the stain looks like a window failure. The window is where the water surfaced, not where it entered. Cleaning the glass, replacing the sash, or resealing the unit all leave the mechanism untouched and the stain returns next winter. The actual fixes are upstream and in this order: clear the gutters before winter, address attic insulation and air sealing so the roof deck stays cold, and improve attic ventilation. Roof heat cable treats the symptom and is a reasonable stopgap on a problem roof, but it is not a repair.

That meltwater runs down the roof to the eave, which overhangs unheated space and is genuinely cold, and refreezes there.
The refrozen ice builds into a dam. Subsequent meltwater pools behind it, and standing water on a shingle roof goes where water always goes — under the courses, because shingles shed water, they do not seal against it.
A gutter packed with needles or leaf gives the ice a base to build on and holds meltwater at the eave rather than carrying it away. This is the part homeowners control.
Once inside, the water tracks down the sheathing and the wall cavity until it hits a horizontal interruption. The head of a window is the most common one, which is why the stain appears there rather than at the roofline.
Gutter clearing before the first hard freeze is inexpensive and is the highest-return action available. Insulation and air-sealing work is a larger project but addresses the actual cause and pays back in heating cost as well. Interior stain repair is trim and paint work, and doing it before the drainage is fixed simply means doing it again.
Clearing gutters in autumn is a reasonable DIY task on a single-story home with safe ladder footing, and it is the most valuable thing on this list. Removing an ice dam that has already formed is not: chipping at it damages roofing, and roof work in ice is genuinely dangerous. If a dam has formed, the safe interim measures are raking snow off the lower few feet of roof from the ground and running heat cable — not climbing up with a hammer.
Removing it once is half the job. This is the half that determines whether you pay for it again next year.
